Resident Coordinator (Sao Tome and Principe)

About the role

The Resident Coordinator (RC) is the highest‑ranking United Nations representative in Sao Tome and Principe, responsible for leading the UN Country Team and ensuring coherent implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. Reporting to the Secretary‑General and annually to the host government, the RC drives the UN’s contribution to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Key responsibilities

• Represent the United Nations at the highest governmental level and foster engagement with civil society, bilateral and multilateral partners, academia and the private sector.
• Lead the development, monitoring and reporting of the UN Cooperation Framework in close consultation with the Government.
• Coordinate system‑wide UN support to the Government, ensuring alignment with national priorities and the 2030 Agenda.
• Oversee the UN Country Team’s implementation of programmes, ensuring accountability and results‑based management.
• Report annually on system‑wide implementation of the UN Cooperation Framework to both the Secretary‑General and the host Government.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in senior leadership or diplomatic roles within international development or multilateral organisations.
• Proven ability to manage complex, multi‑stakeholder environments and to negotiate at the highest political level.
• Deep understanding of the UN development system, the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.
• Strong commitment to sustainable development, poverty eradication and leaving no one behind.
